On 8 October, Viva Salud launched an emergency fundraising campaign for AWDA, our partner in the Gaza Strip. With the scale of Israel\u2019s violence now reaching unprecedented levels, AWDA continues to need all possible forms of support. However, whilst the focus was initially on emergency aid \u2013 such as the purchase of water and medicines \u2013 the aim is now once again to provide the organisation with long-term support.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 7 October, AWDA has been working tirelessly to support the Palestinian people. Risking their lives, staff have remained on the ground, in hospitals that are regularly targeted by Israeli bombardments. Their working conditions were, and still are, appalling. There is a shortage of everything: medicines, medical equipment, fuel, drinking water, food\u2026 Everything. Through our fundraising efforts, we have tried to meet some of AWDA\u2019s needs, so that they can devote themselves fully to the fight for the health of all Gazans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we\u2019ve succeeded. Since 7 October, with your help, we\u2019ve managed to raise a total of 313,408 euros. <\/strong>This was a substantial sum, which was passed on to AWDA and enabled them to keep their day-to-day services running. Thanks to the aid received from Belgium, their two hospitals and four medical centres remain operational to this day. Their importance cannot be underestimated in a situation where there are virtually no hospitals left in operation to serve a population of over 2 million people. And thanks in particular to the emergency aid from Viva Salud, AWDA is even able to to build a huge temporary field hospital right next to their hospital in Nuseirat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For programmes that are sound in the long term<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After nearly a year of atrocities in the Gaza Strip, we must also try to look to the future. <\/strong>Israel is specifically targeting healthcare facilities and their staff. The damage at every level is immense. Even if the genocide were to end today, thousands of Gazans would still die in the months and years to come as a result of malnutrition and a lack of medical care<\/strong>, etc. The medical journal The Lancet has calculated<\/a> that at least 186,000 Gazans are expected to lose their lives as a result of Israel\u2019s repeated attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is therefore very important to take a structural approach to our support<\/strong>. It will undoubtedly take years to fully rebuild the healthcare system in Gaza. Rebuilding the healthcare infrastructure is one of the main tasks facing AWDA. But we must do more. Our support must enable AWDA to once again, in the years to come, provide training for young people, educate communities about the right to healthcare, and so much more. That is why Viva Salud continues to provide them with financial support, so that they can invest in the health of every resident of Gaza.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to providing vital healthcare to the population, AWDA continues to play a very important role in raising awareness of the violence suffered by the people of Gaza. AWDA is a key source for the WHO, as well as for major media organisations including Al Jazeera, the BBC and CNN<\/strong>\u2026 This communication work is of crucial importance and is supported by the Viva Salud programme. Furthermore, in the midst of the war, with the support of Viva Salud, AWDA organised workshops for children and young people on emergency aid and mental health\u2026 always with psychosocial support workers present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pillars of resistance and solidarity <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, we also continue to support our other Palestinian partners, BISAN<\/a> and the HWC (Health Work Committees<\/a>) so that they can resume their work and once again organise communities and groups, document human rights violations and restore hope to the Palestinian people.<\/strong> Through the work of AWDA, their efforts form a pillar of resistance and solidarity.<\/strong> Your support is vital in helping them with this important task. It enables Viva Salud and its partners to resume their work and to building a future for the Palestinian people\u2019s right to healthcare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Bisan has played a major role in the Palestinian umbrella organisation PNGO, which champions the interests of Palestinians and Palestinian social organisations. <\/strong>Bisan has just completed a study on access to healthcare for Palestinians with cancer and has produced a series of unique reports on the impact of the war on the labour market and on the mental health of Palestinians<\/strong>. Their work has led the Palestinian Authority to recognise Gaza as a region at risk of famine<\/strong>, and there are so many other achievements besides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Viva Salud project, The Health Work Committees, based mainly in the West Bank, focused in 2024 on providing psychosocial support to their target group: young people.<\/strong> They have therefore organised several sessions for young people on post-traumatic stress, and have also provided initial psychosocial support to people in extremely vulnerable situations. This work was carried out \u2013 and continues to this day \u2013 against a backdrop of escalating violence in the West Bank: mainly in the areas of Jenin, Tulkarm, Tubas and Nablus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
