The coronavirus crisis has shown how Cuba has managed to protect its population thanks to a well thought-out plan. Nevertheless, the fight against the virus remains complicated for a country with few resources. As soon as the outbreak of the coronavirus was announced in Wuhan (China), the Cuban authorities sprang into action. The result is a solid action plan focusing on screening and testing. There is one GP and one local nurse for every 400 families. They know the state of health of each individual, which is very important in combating a contagious virus like Covid 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the population<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to medical staff, civil society organisations also play an important role in the Cuban healthcare system. The Felix Varela Centre <\/a>is one of these organisations. The centre has extensive experience of working in working-class neighbourhoods and schools. Its volunteers put their knowledge to work in the fight against the virus, providing an essential link between health workers and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortage of medical equipment<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The paralysis of international tourism has hit the Cuban economy hard. In addition, the economic and financial blockade by the United States is strangling the country - one of the consequences of this is that the healthcare sector is facing a critical shortage of needles, surgical gloves, basic medicines and syringes, particularly for vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some countries export arms, Cuba exports its medical brigades, its healthcare and its solidarity. But Cuba's healthcare workers can also count on our solidarity.
