Over the past year, we have campaigned to ensure that vaccines and other important tools in the fight against the coronavirus are accessible worldwide.
Our campaign requirements
Under the slogan «Share the vaccine, not the virus», We have put three requests on the agenda:
1. Collaborate internationally!
Our government must do everything in its power to distribute vaccines fairly through the World Health Organisation.
2. Put the vaccine in the hands of the public!
We support the European Citizens' Initiative No Profit on the Pandemic, which calls for the lifting of patents on the corona vaccine and the sharing of knowledge and technology. In this way, the vaccine can be produced worldwide.
3. Strengthen public healthcare!
Coping with a pandemic is an enormous challenge. We need a well-developed public health system, worldwide!
The impact of our campaign
From World Health Day on 7 April to Human Rights Day on 10 December, we have been raising public awareness of the issue of vaccines in creative ways. And it's paid off! The Minister for Development Cooperation, Meryame Kitir, supports our demands and we have also found a great deal of support among the other political parties.
Together with several other Belgian organisations, we have so far collected 32,000 signatures to put pressure on the European Commission to make the corona vaccine a global public good. Our volunteers collected signatures in their neighbourhoods and, when that wasn't possible, we set up online call centres.
We also organised a number of major initiatives, including Lights4Lives: the march for vaccine justice on 30 November. We set up an original action in the park, we spoke to people at the ManiFiesta solidarity festival and we reached a lot of new people with a quiz on Facebook.
The fight goes on
While in Europe we are massively administering third «booster» doses, in low-income countries the vaccination rate is still very low. The COVAX charitable scheme, which aims to donate vaccines worldwide, is not achieving its objectives. Meanwhile, significant production capacity remains unused worldwide. More and more public figures and politicians are recognising the need to lift patents. Together with our partners, we will continue to fight for a vaccine in public hands and stronger public healthcare!
Thank you very much!
Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign throughout the year, by signing the european citizens' initiative, by making a donation or by taking part in one of the our actions !
