For public healthcare systems
Most countries in the world recognise the right to health. Yet at least 400 million people worldwide do not have access to essential healthcare. Inequalities are everywhere. They are making people ill. Let’s consider public healthcare systems.
Being able to see a doctor is not the only prerequisite for good health. Social factors account for 85 % of our health. A healthy living environment, safe working conditions, and access to clean water and a good diet are of vital importance. To guarantee the right to health for everyone, social justice must therefore be a priority. To achieve this, we need a robust public healthcare system: one that is accessible, more affordable, more efficient, more democratic and of a higher quality for both patients and staff. One need only look at the success of Cuba’s public healthcare system.
Our objectives as regards public healthcare systems
We demand that institutions involved in international solidarity – such as international co-operation organisations, the World Health Organisation, the European Commission and the World Bank – prioritise the right to health. Our health should be in public hands. In the coming years, we will campaign on the global healthcare workforce crisis, on the impact of global trade policy on the privatisation of healthcare, and on the importance of strong primary healthcare in improving public health.
Our partnerships
We cannot do this on our own. We work in partnership with campaign organisations in the Philippines, Palestine and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Belgium, we are members of the Be-cause health platform, the Action Santé & Solidarité platform and the international solidarity umbrella organisations 11.11.11 and CNCD-11.11.11.
At an international level, we play an active role in the international movement for the right to health, the People’s Health Movement. We are also members of a number of networks that oppose the commercialisation and privatisation of healthcare: the Consortium Against the Commercialisation of Health, the European Network Against the Commercialisation and Privatisation of Health and Social Protection, and the Geneva Global Health Hub. Because together, we are stronger!
