AWDA, a long-standing partner of Viva Salud in Gaza, has decided to raise funds to build a temporary hospital next to their hospital, which was damaged by bombing.
Israel’s war against the people of Gaza is raging. Since the start of the war, more than 40,000 civilians have been killed. According to the UN, around 1.9 million people – 90 per cent of Gaza’s population – have been forcibly displaced more than once, up to three or even four times. Since the start of this genocidal military campaign, the Israeli occupying forces have deliberately targeted Gaza’s healthcare system with the aim of destroying it.
15,000 patients a month
Following the Israeli invasions in the north (Jabalya) and the south (Rafah), central Gaza was flooded with displaced people. Before the war, the population of central Gaza was estimated at 320,000. Today, around 940,000 people are seeking refuge in central Gaza. The AWDA hospital in Al Nuseirat, in central Gaza, is therefore operating at 400 % of its capacity. In response to this situation, AWDA staff have decided to build a field hospital, which should be able to ease the pressure and provide healthcare services to around 15,000 patients per month. The hospital will cover an area of 1,320 m² and will include a 23-bed A&E department, an outpatient department to expand obstetrics and gynaecology services, and an inpatient ward with a capacity of 110 beds.
The hospital is currently under construction. Building work began in July 2024 and is due to be completed in January 2025. The total cost of the hospital is estimated at US$1.5 million, including construction work, equipment and medical supplies. A significant portion of this sum has yet to be raised, which is why we need your help!
